CLIMATE CHANGE and LOW CARBON DEVELOPMENT
In 2019, all the local authorities in the Liverpool City Region declared Climate Emergencies. All the authorities have Climate Action Plans and have goals for their authorities to be Net Zero Carbon by 2040. Sefton and Liverpool Councils are striving to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030.
Whilst many of the aims are focused on Council buildings and assets, planning is seen as one of the ways of achieving wider net zero carbon goals. Aiming for new development to be as energy efficient as possible and fuelled by low carbon or renewable energy is one of the ways this can be achieved. Through the planning application process, MEAS alongside individual Council’s Climate Change Officers helps to achieve this by requiring new development to be net zero carbon ready where possible.
More widely, MEAS is involved in a variety of projects aiming to reduce climate change and build climate resilience across the Liverpool City Region.
